Legal Background[edit | edit source]

Under Georgia House Bill 280, 2017, any person with a valid Concealed Carry Weapons permit (CCW) is permitted to carry a concealed firearm on their person or in a bag. [1]

In general, to obtain a CCW, a person must be above the age of 21 and must undergo a background check.

As stated in the bill: "Any person who is not a license holder who violates this subsection shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction thereof, be punished by a fine of not more than $10,000.00, by imprisonment for not less than two nor more than ten years, or both."

"Any weapons carry license holder when he or she is in any building or on real property owned by or leased to any public technical school, vocational school, college, or university, or other public institution of postsecondary education; provided, however, that such exception shall:..."

Restrictions[edit | edit source]

As stated in the bill, a person is not permitted to carry a firearm in facilities used for sports, in student housing (including fraternity and sorority houses), when high schoolers are present in a class, or in a faculty or staff member's office.

Best Practices[edit | edit source]

Although it may be permitted to carry a firearm in a bag, those who choose to concealed carry should consider their ability to control that firearm. If that firearm is concealed on the body, a person who carries that firearm may be able to maintain control and awareness of that firearm more easily.

In addition, persons who elect to carry a firearm should make every effort to effectively conceal that firearm and should consult an attorney if uncertain about any aspect of carrying a firearm.
